Laser hair removal treatments work by sending powerful light energy through the surface of the skin and into the deeper layers where the hair root sits in individual follicles. Because the hair pigment is darker than the surrounding tissue, it absorbs more laser energy. The absorbed light converts into heat, which rapidly rises and damages the entire follicle.
A damaged follicle can’t properly produce hair, so regrowth is delayed, which means that existing hairs ultimately fall out and no new hairs grow in any time soon to take their place. It is important to note that laser hair removal works best on hairs that are actively growing. Not all hairs are actively growing at the same time, so to effectively clear an area, multiple sessions—typically three to six—are necessary.
Once cleared, the results are long-lasting, with some people essentially considering them to be permanent. Although hair can regrow, it is often finer and lighter than before. Maintenance treatments can also help to keep the targeted areas hair-free.
